Inspired Art: A Modern Approach to Art Expression
I was born in England to Indian parents and moved to Canada as a teenager. Although I earned a fine arts degree from the University of Toronto, life took me in a different direction. However, during the COVID-19 pandemic, I rekindled my passion for drawing, focusing on charcoal sketches of family pets.
After my mother's passing in June 2023, art became a means of healing for me. The moment I handed down her sarees to my daughter marked a significant shift in my creative path. The prints and embroidery of these sarees stirred a wealth of memories, rekindling my passion for acrylic painting.
Reflecting on the intricate designs, colors, and moods that each print inspired, I began to explore how the fabrics we wear, drape in our homes, or encounter in life shape our memories and influence our emotions.
My work explores the interplay of fabric design, colour, and stories woven together to bring our memories to life.
Artist Statement
In my Woven Landscape series, I reimagine landscapes as knitted and woven scenes using acrylic paint and textile inspired marks. Inspired by my mother’s sarees and rooted in memories of family life, these works treat landscape as something lived in and carried forward. The knitted stitches are influenced by watching my daughter crochet. Through repetition, marks, and visible threads, my scenes become visual blankets, offering warmth, care, and a sense of belonging.
